How to compare construction material prices in Zambia
To compare construction material prices correctly, standardise the item specification, unit, quantity, VAT basis, delivery destination, quotation date, and payment terms before comparing totals. Then calculate landed cost rather than choosing the lowest unit price.

1. Lock the specification
Two products with similar names can have different strength, dimensions, finish, brand, or compliance requirements. Write one comparison description and ask every supplier to price that same description.
2. Standardise the commercial basis
Record whether VAT is included, the quotation validity period, payment terms, minimum order, stock status, and whether the price is for collection or delivery. Convert pack, tonne, length, square-metre, and cubic-metre prices to the unit used in the BOQ.
3. Calculate landed cost
Add transport, loading, offloading, handling, and route-related charges. A supplier that is cheaper at the yard may be more expensive at the site.
4. Record the decision
Keep the quotations, date, selected rate, and reason for selection. The record helps reviewers understand the estimate and gives procurement teams an alternative if availability changes.
